Voicepacer User Guide
Voicepacer is a voice-aware teleprompter. It listens as you read and scrolls at exactly your pace — no foot pedal, no remote, no guesswork. This guide walks you through every feature.
1. Getting started
Open the app at /app. On first visit your browser will ask permission to use the microphone. Voicepacer needs microphone access to detect when you're speaking; audio is processed locally in your browser and never uploaded.
- Use Chrome, Edge, or Safari for best speech-recognition support.
- Use a wired or close-up microphone in noisy environments.
- Voicepacer works on desktop, tablet, and mobile.
2. Import a script
You can load text in three ways:
- Upload a file — click Upload in the toolbar and choose a
.pdf,.docx, or.txtfile. Voicepacer extracts the text and cleans up paragraph breaks automatically. - Paste text — open the script editor (Edit script) and paste any text directly.
- Switch between scripts — every script you upload is saved to your local library. Use the Choose script menu in the toolbar to switch instantly.
3. Voice-paced scrolling
Press the microphone button (or Space) to start listening. As you read aloud, Voicepacer matches your spoken words against the script and advances the highlighted line to keep up with you.
- Speak naturally — the prompter follows your real cadence.
- Pause and it pauses — auto-scroll stops when you stop talking.
- Skip a line? — keep reading; the matcher catches up within a few words.
- Re-take a section? — use Rewind to jump backward, then resume.
4. Manual playback
Don't want voice control? Use Play / Pause to scroll at a fixed speed instead. Useful for rehearsals or when reading silently.
5. Tune the look & pace
Adjust display settings from the toolbar:
- Font size — make text comfortable at your distance from the screen.
- Line height — wider spacing helps your eye track quickly.
- Speed — set the manual scroll speed.
- Mirror mode () — flips text horizontally for use with a beam-splitter teleprompter rig.
6. Edit the script
Click Edit script to fix typos, merge broken lines, or paste in new content. Save your changes and the prompter reloads instantly. You can also export the cleaned script as a .txt file using Download .txt.
7. Multi-script library
Every script you upload is added to a local library. Switch between them without losing scroll position, and remove old scripts from the same menu.
8. Keyboard shortcuts
| Space | Start / stop voice listening |
| P | Manual play / pause |
| R | Rewind |
| F | Fast forward |
| M | Toggle mirror mode |
| Shift+Alt+D | Toggle layout debug overlay |
9. Privacy
Voicepacer runs speech recognition in your browser. Audio is never sent to our servers, and your scripts are stored locally on your device unless you explicitly upload them.
10. Troubleshooting
- Scrolling won't start when I speak. Check the mic permission in your browser, and confirm the listening indicator is green. Try a different browser if needed (Chrome works best).
- It scrolls too far ahead. Move your mic closer or lower the ambient noise; some words are being matched twice.
- PDF text looks broken. Open Parser settings and toggle hyphen-merging or paragraph detection.
